Bimatoprost
Latisse / Lumigan (lash serum) · Prostaglandin analog (topical)
What it is
A glaucoma eye-drop that grows eyelashes as a side effect — packaged and FDA-approved for exactly that as Latisse. Unapproved "lash serum" versions of the same molecule also circulate.
What human evidence shows
Properly strong: randomized trials for both glaucoma and eyelash growth; the cosmetic indication is one of the rare beauty products with real RCT backing.
Risks
Documented and specific: permanent iris darkening (brown pigmentation that does not reverse), reported periorbital fat atrophy and deepening of the eyelid sulcus with long use, lid skin darkening, and eye irritation. Unapproved versions lack the applicators and labeling that the approved product's safety record assumes.
Legal status
US: prescription-only (both Latisse and generic bimatoprost). The FDA has warned about cosmetic products containing prostaglandin analogs.
Evidence base
established literature
Large human evidence base: several phase 3 or 4 trial reports, plus multiple meta-analyses or systematic reviews.
