Lutein & zeaxanthin
Macular carotenoids · Longevity
Eye-health carotenoids with a rare distinction in this aisle: a large, well-run trial behind them.
What the evidence says
AREDS2 is the anchor, and its result is narrower than the marketing: ADDING lutein and zeaxanthin produced no benefit in the overall primary analysis. Benefit appeared in the substitution comparison (replacing beta-carotene) and in participants with low dietary intake, in people who already had intermediate macular degeneration. Evidence that supplementing improves vision or prevents anything in healthy eyes is thin, and the "blue light protection" framing is marketing rather than trial-backed.
What studies used
AREDS2 used 10 mg lutein with 2 mg zeaxanthin daily. Fat-soluble; trial formulations were taken with meals.
Reported from published studies and product labelling — a record of what was used in research, not a recommendation. What is right for you is a conversation with a clinician.
Watch out for
- AREDS2 also found beta-carotene raised lung-cancer risk in smokers — the reason those formulas were reformulated
- Dietary sources (leafy greens, egg yolk) supply these readily
Evidence base
established literature
Large human evidence base: several phase 3 or 4 trial reports, plus multiple meta-analyses or systematic reviews.
This letter measures how much human research exists, not whether it works for you — the tier above (Moderate) is the read on quality.
