Psyllium husk
Gut
Soluble fibre studied for regularity, cholesterol and satiety.
What it is
Ground seed husk that forms a gel in water, the most boring item in this catalog and one of the very best evidenced. It has an FDA-authorized heart health claim, real cholesterol data, and works for both constipation and diarrhoea, which almost nothing else does.
How it works
Psyllium is a soluble, gel-forming fibre that resists fermentation. That gel does three things: bulks and softens stool, traps bile acids so the liver pulls cholesterol from blood to replace them, and slows gastric emptying enough to blunt glucose spikes. Unglamorous mechanisms with unusually consistent results.
Which form to buy
Cheapest per gram; mix and drink promptly before it gels.
The default.
Requires many capsules to reach studied doses, check the gram count.
Convenient, expensive, easy to under-dose.
Same fibre, often with sugar or sweeteners.
Fine if it makes you actually take it.
Inulin is fermentable (more gas, prebiotic effect); psyllium's gel-forming, low-fermentation profile is what the cholesterol data rests on.
Not interchangeable with psyllium.
What it actually does, graded
Consistent meta-analytic reductions. The FDA authorized health claim is specific: diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include at least 7 g/day of soluble fibre FROM PSYLLIUM may reduce heart-disease risk.
The AGA/ACG guideline gives fiber a CONDITIONAL recommendation on low-certainty evidence, psyllium was the only fiber that looked effective, from three older trials with bias and imprecision.
The gel is often described as working both directions, but the guideline evidence concerns global IBS symptoms rather than a demonstrated antidiarrhoeal effect.
One of the few fibres guidelines actively recommend for IBS.
Consistent modest reductions in post-meal glucose and HbA1c in diabetes trials.
Mild satiety effects; not a weight-loss agent.
Pros and cons
- Multiple genuinely strong evidence bases in one cheap product
- Backed by a specific FDA-authorized health claim (7 g/day soluble fibre from psyllium, within a low-saturated-fat diet)
- Especially relevant on a GLP-1, where reduced food intake often means constipation
- Bloating and gas in the first weeks are common
- Must be taken with plenty of water, choking and obstruction risk otherwise
- It blocks absorption of several medications
- Genuinely unpleasant texture for some people
What to expect
- Days 1-14: bloating and gas as the gut adjusts, commonly reported.
- Cholesterol trials measured over weeks to months.
- Constipation relief is usually the fastest-noticed effect.
Interactions
Is it for you?
- Constipation while eating much less than usual, a very common complaint worth discussing with your clinician
- LDL cholesterol you want a food-based lever for
- IBS, where guidelines actually name it
- You already eat plenty of fibre and have no symptoms to fix
Who should avoid it
- Anyone with swallowing difficulties, strictures, or a history of bowel obstruction
- Taking it without adequate fluid, that is where the real risk lives
Research on this supplement
Papers about this supplement, not proof of the claims above. A title says what was studied, which is sometimes a negative result or a different question entirely.

What the evidence says
Large, consistent human evidence for constipation, stool form and LDL reduction. One of the best-supported gut interventions available.
What studies used
5-10 g daily with plenty of water. Any time, always with water.
Reported from published studies and product labelling — a record of what was used in research, not a recommendation. What is right for you is a conversation with a clinician.
Watch out for
- Without enough water it makes things worse
- Start low, sudden fibre jumps cause bloating
Evidence base
substantial literature
Strong human evidence: either a phase 3 or 4 trial report alongside review-level evidence, or ten or more randomised controlled trial reports.
This letter measures how much human research exists, not whether it works for you — the tier above (Strong) is the read on quality.
