How it works (mechanism)
Synthetic analog of tuftsin (an immunomodulatory peptide). Binds GABA-A receptors indirectly through neurotrophic factor BDNF modulation, producing anxiolytic effect without GABAergic sedation or dependence.

What it actually is
Selank is a synthetic peptide developed in Russia, built from tuftsin — a fragment of an antibody with immune-modulating activity — with a stabilising tail added. It is used as an anti-anxiety and cognitive agent, usually as a nasal spray, and is registered as a medicine in Russia. Outside that, it is a research chemical: three human-trial records are indexed and essentially no independent Western replication exists.
Selank appears to work partly through the GABA system, which is the same broad target as benzodiazepines, but without producing sedation, dependence or withdrawal. It also raises BDNF, a growth factor involved in neuronal plasticity, and influences the balance of serotonin and dopamine metabolism. A functional connectomic study found measurable effects on brain network activity. What none of that establishes is a reliable clinical benefit in an anxiety disorder.

Short peptides can reach the brain via the nasal route, bypassing some of the barriers injection faces. This is how it is used clinically in Russia.
